Pool heaters
Pool heaters are now standard in cold areas of the country. Heaters
extend the swimming season by two months at end of summer and early
spring. There are three main classes of pool heaters:
• Solar – This technology is improving constantly. This
method converts the rays of the sun into energy to heat water. Used
with a solar blanket, one will gain energy efficiency while warming
the water.
• Electric – This is great for keeping the temperature
between 80 and 90 degrees. Even in 45 degree weather electric heaters
are effective enough to allow one to have a comfortable swim. However,
this type of heating is expensive to operate.
• Gas – Gas heaters are most effective when used for a
short period of time, although the fuel is costly.
What size pool heaters are needed? Most manufacturers recommend that
one buy a heater one size larger than the basic requirement. Choose
a heater that will keep the water in between 78 and 86 degrees. The
size of the heater one may need is measured in BTUs. To learn the approximate
BTU required for your pool, multiply the surface area of the pool by
the temperature rise by 12. If one assumes a one degree Fahrenheit rise
per hour this equation will work.
A pool heater will maximize the value of your pool by allowing one
to enjoy very comfortable water temperatures. A good heater can allow
one to swim earlier in the season and later in the fall. It can also
lengthen the swim day. Pool heaters will increase the value and cost
efficiency of the pool.
