Pool chemicals
Pool chemicals should be kept out of the reach of children at all times.
Chemicals are very dangerous and harmful to kids. Chlorine is a commonly
used substance for keeping bacteria in check. This makes the water safer
for people. However, consuming chlorine can be deadly so do not expose
yourself or your children to toxic quantities of it.
Swimming pools that contain chlorine pool chemicals may cause asthma
according to researchers at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. This may
explain why people using indoor pools are likely to contract asthma
as opposed to other sports. Dr. K. Thickett of the Occupational Lung
Diseases Unit says “Our results show, indeed, that nitrogen trichloride
(produced by chlorine) is a cause of occupational asthma in indoor swimming
pools.” This is why many pool workers and lifeguards are prone
to asthma.
Researchers in the U.S. and Canada have found that pool chemicals,
especially chlorine, are linked to higher occurrences of lung damage,
stillbirths, asthma, miscarriages, and bladder cancer. Children spending
an average of less than two hours per day in an indoor swimming pool
suffer lung damage comparable to what one would see in an adult smoker.
However, a number of non-toxic, safe options are available such as using
ozone gas or ultra violet light.
